Phelan are proud to announce the completion of a prestigious office fit out for the country’s leading package holiday company, TUI at their UK Headquarters in Luton.

The project involved an extensive re-fit over 3 floors including the 3500 m2 first floor of the building and the formation of a new 700 m2 central glass and steel atrium.  The purpose of the refurbishment was to provide a vibrant and colourful new work space for TUI staff relocating from around the country and to upgrade the existing facilities, including the Café and servery areas which were extended and remodelled.

The centre-piece of the whole project is without doubt the bespoke “bow-string” roof trusses, which hold the atrium glass and were designed and fabricated by Phelan.

In order to hoist the “canoe-shaped” feature trusses to the roof, Phelan employed a mighty 200 tonne crane with a 72 m main boom to reach the furthest end of the atrium from the car park.  The fitting out work beneath the atrium was also able to proceed in the dry by virtue of a system scaffold temporary roof and sliding gantry system.

Phelan also designed and installed the “nautical” themed central staircase, feature diffusers and display cabinets for the air conditioning, joinery and balustrades.

Phelan co-ordinated every aspect of the project from design, working with distinguished architects SMC Corstorphine and Wright to the integration of a £1.3m mechanical and electrical services installation by recognised specialists, NG Bailey.  The M&E services required a new raised metal access floor system and extensive work to the old floor, which was removed and re-laid.

The project was carried out with the Client in occupation throughout and through careful planning and considerate execution of the work the whole project was completed on time and with minimal disruption to the operation of the building.

The building occupants were kept informed of Phelan’s progress through a window specially commissioned in the staff café area!

Even the complex ‘break-out’ phase where new finishes were extended at 2nd and 3rd floor levels to meet the existing occupied office areas was completed “out of hours” and with the minimum of fuss.  TUI now have a modern, light and bright office space with some incredible design features all courtesy of Phelan Construction!
