Phelan is a SECBE Finalist in the “People Development” category

We are positively thrilled to announce that Phelan is a finalist in the “People Development” category of the Constructing Excellence Awards for the London and South-East region! At Phelan, we genuinely believe people sit at the heart of our organisation. We recognise that they are our greatest asset, and as such, we feel it appropriate to invest heavily in their personal development and well-being while with us. Our supportive approach is reflected in our 8.9/10 satisfaction rating from our 2018 staff satisfaction survey.

The basis of Phelan’s entry in this category is our work in the following areas;
  • Phelan’s external work in tackling the nationwide skills shortage for the construction industry, supporting the next generation of talented individuals by partnering with local training providers and sponsoring STEM-based courses. We’re also offering further training to our existing staff to help develop their skills.
  • Our ‘Women in Construction’ campaign: The Campaign addresses the social and cultural barriers affecting women working within the construction industry, to increase the ratio of women in our own teams. Between April to June 2016, there were so few female workers in the industry that for many of the individual building trades, the government was unable to provide an exact estimate on numbers. Although we have always been an equal rights employer, we recognised we could be doing more to encourage women into the construction industry.
  • Our Phelan Fine campaign for promoting better physical and mental health across all our sites. Suicide kills more construction workers than falls. Given that nearly a third of construction workers have taken time off work due to mental health issues, we felt it was important to focus on providing effective mental health support to our staff.

A list of all finalists is listed on the SECBE website.
